Domain & DNS Guide
Domains and DNS control where visitors and email go. This guide explains the concepts clients most often need when launching with JIJ.
Nameservers
Nameservers tell the internet which DNS provider is authoritative for a domain. For JIJ hosting, clients are typically asked to set nameservers to ns1.jijweb.com and ns2.jijweb.com.
A Records and CNAME Records
A records point a domain or subdomain to an IP address. CNAME records point one hostname to another hostname. Both are commonly used for websites, subdomains, verification, and third-party services.
MX and Email Records
MX records control where email is delivered. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records help receiving mail servers understand which systems are allowed to send mail for the domain.
SSL Certificates
SSL makes HTTPS possible. After DNS points correctly, SSL can usually be issued or verified for the hosted domain.
Domain Transfers
A domain transfer moves registrar billing and management. It should be planned carefully so nameservers, email, and ownership are not disrupted.
